Faculty Resources: Open Access Resources

What are Open Access Resources?

Open Access Resources are openly available and are often licensed to be re-used, re-mixed, and re-distributed. Open is taking what others have created, customizing the open content for your educational needs, and then sharing your creation with others.

Open Access Resources describe any copyrighted work that is licensed in a way that provides users with permission to engage in the following:

  • Retain - create and control copies of the content
  • Reuse - utilize the content in a wide variety of ways
  • Revise - adapt, modify, or alter the content itself
  • Remix - combine the original or revised content with other open content to create something new
  • Redistribute - share copies of the original content, revisions, or remixes

Open Access Resources come in a variety of forms:

  • Primary sources include images, video, and audio recordings. Some sources are in the public domain while others have been licensed as open by their creators.
  • Learning content includes created content such as lectures, animations, and assessments to courses and textbooks.
