Formatting Google Docs: Fonts & Spacing

A guide to assist students in formatting a paper in Google Docs

Fonts

Academic papers require the use of accessible, easily readable fonts like 11-point Arial or 12-point Times New Roman. Your instructor may specify what type of font they wish you to use. To change the font in Google Docs, select your text and locate the name of the current font in the menu bar. The default font in Google Docs is Arial but you can change the font by selecting the font name to open a drop-down menu of fonts.

The number to the right of the font name between the plus (+) and minus (-) sign is the font size. Make the font size bigger or smaller using the plus or minus sign or type in the desired size directly in the number box.

Double Spacing

Academic papers should be double-spaced. You can change the spacing between lines in Google Docs. To do this, highlight your text and select "Line & paragraph spacing". Select "Double" from the drop-down list.
